Heroin Facts
There are approximately 84,000 heroin addiction related visits to emergency rooms in the United States yearly and about 3% - 7% of treated patients require admission for pneumonia, collection of fluid in the lungs, and other complications.
Users often experience nausea and vomiting the first time they take heroin, especially after injecting.
Heroin is sometimes sniffed, or the fumes from the heated powder is inhaled (this method is sometimes called "chasing the dragon").
Heroin IV users place themselves at greater risk of contracting the HIV/AIDS virus.

Heroin addiction inevitably occurs when heroin is used routinely over a period of time. The onset of heroin addiction can be rapid and severe, depending on the amount of heroin used and frequency.

Heroin Detox and Rehablitation goes hand and hand. Heroin detox is the first step to a successful recovery. Heroin detox is not simple and should take place at an in-patient drug treatment center.

Heroin Detox can be extremely uncomfortable. Heroin withdrawal can cause physical and emotional trauma: including stroke, heart attack, and even death. Methadone is often used for heroin detox, to ease the pain of heroin withdrawal. The outcome of methadone treatment typically ends with the individual acquiring an addiction to methadone, and continued heroin use.

Home or out-patient heroin detoxification rarely succeeds in breaking the cycle of heroin addiction. The addict can expect a long list of heroin withdrawal symptoms to occur as they attempt their heroin detox. The worst case scenario for heroin detoxification is an additional addiction to depressants; this is known as a “mixed addiction”. It has been found the best way to get off, and stay off, heroin is to go cold-turkey (ending use abruptly without the aid of other drugs or medications) at an in-patient drug rehabilitation center. In-patient drug rehab centers help to keep the addict away from the normal stresses of living as well as the routines of their heroin addiction. The environment of recovery is crucial; since there are many factors that can inhibit the addicts ability for a successful recovery from heroin addiction.
